VDM25000 Naval Marine Drive

GE’s medium voltage VDM25000 drive is a modular, multiphase naval marine drive, fully shock-rated and available as direct sea water or fresh-water cooled.

PROVEN TECHNOLOGY

• Operational excellence for over a decade in naval ships’ electric grids of up to 110 MW, providing electric ship power and propulsion.

• Proven to energize mission capability on the latest generation of naval platforms, including aircraft carriers (QE Class) and destroyers (Type 45, DDG1000) and powering land-based test and emulation platforms (US Navy ITF; MPTF).

• Full load torque at all speeds when motoring.

• Build-to-print configuration enabling manufacture at GE and partner sites

Compact Configuration:

  • Medium voltage (MV) transformer-less connection; smooth operation with marine electrical power systems in 50 Hz or 60 Hz power networks.

  • Compact and modular configuration and construction with easily removable modular items for improved maintainability and reliability.

  • Interchangeable building blocks –supply and machine bridge modules.

  • Enhanced internal cooling to improve compactness.

  • Easy serviceability; front access, easy replacement of modules without water leakage

Low Noise

  • Powerful controller for low noise & vibration signature & communication with ship systems

  • Smooth output voltage waveforms from each converter phase before reaching the motor windings.

  • Bespoke converter circuit for each motor phase for smooth waveform and low EMC.
General Electric

High Redundancy

  • Flexible, resilient multi-phase architecture and independent multi-channel arrangement with high redundancy.

  • Shock rated, validated by detailed analysis.

  • Key part of Ship’s Electric Grid, enabling flexible design layout for improved survivability.
General Electric

PWM voltage source inverter

  • Able to operate on 1, 2 or 3 and more channels.
    • Independent converter channels per group of motor windings
    • Bi-directional speed regulated drive with dynamic braking

  • Isolation of voltage disturbances created from the ship’s supply by each channel.

  • Compensates for ship’s supply fluctuations.

  • Protects ship’s supply from converter disturbances.
