The Largest Synchronous Condenser Ever Produced in Peterborough is Out the Door

In September 2014, GE won a contract to provide equipment for the Standpipe Substation 65 Mvar Synchronous Condenser near Hanna, Wyoming. The synchronous condenser substation will provide dynamic reactive power support, required to control voltage on double circuit 230 kV transmission lines that can be adversely effected by nearby wind farms.

The 65MVAR synchronous condenser that GE Power Conversion is providing represents the largest solid 6 pole machine ever shipped from its Peterborough Ontario factory. The motor was completed on 18 December 2015 - just before Christmas - and weighs in at an impressive 155 tons.
For applications of this type, typically a 2-pole technology is used.  However, GE was able to deliver a solution with significantly lower no-load power losses using a salient 6-pole machine, a key differentiator for this application.
There is currently an increasing need for synchronous condensers in many regions as traditional generation capacity (nuclear and coal) is retired and replaced with renewable power. GE is well positioned to meet this need with its Series 9000 4&6 pole synchronous machine product lines.
