2 March – Liverpool – Today GE’s Power Conversion business and other members of the United Kingdom Naval Engineering Science & Technology (UKNEST) Forum were honored to join teams from the Royal Navy on board HMS Prince of Wales for a day celebrating Engineering Excellence in the UK.
While docked in Liverpool, UK, HMS Prince of Wales welcomed representatives from many of the hundreds of companies across the country who were part of the build and supply chain, to recognize the huge national endeavor that went in to building these ships. GE’s Power Conversion business provided - for both HMS Prince of Wales and her sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth - the HV Distribution system, HV Drives, and Propulsion Motors as well as the Electrical Power Control and Management system. GE also supplied the HV Generators to support generating power for the entire carrier.
For almost three decades, GE has supported the Royal Navy with world-class technology. Today, the vast majority of the UK Royal Navy’s large vessels are powered by GE’s electric and hybrid propulsion solutions, including HMS Queen Elizabeth Class, as well as the Type 45 destroyers, the new Type 26 frigates, and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Tide Class tankers.
The innovative aircraft carriers represent British design excellence, this cutting-edge technology is at the core of the Royal Navy’s efforts to ensure the Armed Forces are fit for the future.
Captain John Bonnar, the Royal Navy’s Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Engineering Support, organized the event and shared his thoughts: “The construction of HMS Prince of Wales and her sister ship HMS Queen Elizabeth was one of the most impressive engineering endeavors the Royal Navy has ever seen. Thousands of engineers from across the country were involved in building them, and HMS Prince of Wales’ visit to Liverpool was a great opportunity to recognize their efforts.”
