In recent years there has been a positive trend in the offshore sector toward the use of AC drilling drives rather than the once popular SCR (DC) based systems. GE offers both solutions and also specializes in upgrading and refurbishment of existing SCR switchboards from a variety of original manufacturers.

GE's comprehensive upgrade and re-vamp service for all SCR drilling drive systems, regardless of manufacturing origin, can represent massive savings compared to the cost and disruption of replacing an entire board. GE's experience and skill can be relied upon to engineer and upgrade or replace only the unreliable or obsolete portion while leaving the remainder intact. GE’s Power Conversion business has been among the leaders in the introduction of AC drives into the drilling industry with its MV3000, variable frequency Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) drive.

This MV3000 advanced AC drilling drive features responsive, high-accuracy speed and torque control combined with excellent dynamic characteristics across the speed range. Drilling drive systems meet or exceed the applicable major international, marine and offshore standards including IEC, IEEE45, LRS, DNV, BV, GL, RMRS, ABS, KR, CCS AND RINA classification society rules and regulations. In addition GE’s AC drilling drive system has secured ATEX approvals for commonly used third party drilling motors.

To complete the package GE delivers driller’s consoles, mud consoles, transfer panels and dynamic brake resistor cubicles.

GE’s Power Conversion business has been a leading player in the design and manufacture of drilling systems since 1980. Our drilling systems are installed on more than 100 drill ships, semi-submersibles, jack-ups and platforms. Through our extensive experience GE has acquired expertise in all conceivable environments from the tropical waters off Brazil to the icy waters off Russia’s northern and far eastern coasts.

GE’s drilling systems are a feature of Gazflot’s latest arctic capable semisubmersible drilling rigs Severnoye Siyanie (Northern Lights) and Polyarnaya Zvezda (Polar Star). Said to be among the world’s biggest drilling rigs of their kind, GE’s integrated delivery of power generation, propulsion, C-Series vessel control and position mooring systems includes AC drilling control switchboard based on its MV3000 converters for effective speed and power control of:
